About Mike Nicastro

Hi, I’m Mike. I’m a psychotherapist based in South Denver, and I specialize in working with endurance athletes, runners, triathletes, cyclists, and mountaineers, who are navigating both the demands of sport and the challenges of life outside of training.

I’ve made it my mission to help athletes uncover what’s really holding them back. Many endurance athletes check every box physically: strong training cycles, proven fitness, and discipline. Yet when it comes time to perform, in racing, in recovery, or in life, something still feels off. That “something” is often less about the body and more about the mind.

In therapy, I aim to create a space where you feel genuinely heard, respected, and unrushed. My role is to be the steady presence alongside you, especially in the vulnerable stretches that therapy, like training, often brings. I bring curiosity, accountability, and just enough humor to make room for both the hard work and the humanity in this process. My goal isn’t just to support your performance; it’s to help you rediscover trust in yourself, so you can thrive as both an athlete and a person.

My Approach

My approach is person-centered and relational, rooted in psychodynamic and cognitive-behavioral (CBT) frameworks, and blended with sport-informed and performance psychology strategies. I often work through an attachment lens, believing that the relationships and experiences that shape us early on continue to influence how we train, compete, and see ourselves today.

Therapy with athletes might look like:

  • Unpacking self-doubt and mental blocks that limit performance

  • Processing the emotions around injury, burnout, or transition

  • Building tools for pre-race focus and race-day resilience

  • Exploring how athletic identity and personal identity overlap (and sometimes collide)

I believe that you don’t “lose potential”. What often happens is losing trust in your ability to bring it out under pressure. Together, we’ll work to understand and address those barriers, so you can perform with confidence and live with greater balance.

Who I Work With

I specialize in working with:

  • Endurance athletes managing anxiety, pressure, and performance stress

  • Runners, Cyclists, and Triathletes navigating injury, recovery, or transition

  • Athletes balancing training with identity, relationships, and career demands

  • High school and collegiate athletes facing expectations, confidence challenges, and life decisions

  • Professional and aspiring professional athletes seeking consistent mental support, pre-race calls, and on-site event support

Background & Credentials

Before becoming a therapist, I spent years as both a Division I runner and a high school cross country and track coach. Those experiences shaped how I approach counseling today: with practical tools, honest feedback, and deep respect for the athlete’s journey.

I earned my M.A. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Denver Seminary and am a registered LPCC in Colorado.

A Little About Me

Outside the therapy room, I’m usually out training or recovering from a run in the Colorado mountains, prioritizing friendships in my community, or enjoying time with my wife and a good cup of coffee. Movement, reflection, and humor are core parts of my life. And I bring those same qualities into my work with athletes in ways that feel supportive and human.

If you’re considering sports counseling, know this: you don’t need to know exactly what you’re looking for to begin. I am more than happy to meet for a free initial consult to see if I can support your next steps, whether you’re preparing for a race, navigating an injury, or exploring the deeper layers of your life as both an athlete and a person.
