Frequently Asked Questions
What is endurance sports counseling?
Endurance sports counseling helps athletes explore how training, racing, and life outside of sport connect. It combines evidence-based therapy with an understanding of the endurance mindset. Sessions can include mental skills work, emotional processing, and support for life transitions, injury, or burnout.
How is this different from mental performance coaching?
Coaching focuses primarily on competition results and performance goals. Counseling addresses the whole athlete, including stress, identity, relationships, and long-term well-being. While we often discuss performance strategies, the goal is lasting growth and mental health, not just faster times.
Do I have to be a professional athlete to work with you?
No. I work with high school, collegiate, amateur, and professional athletes. The focus is less about your pace or results and more about helping you bring clarity and balance to how sport fits into your life.
Do you see non-athletes too?
Yes. I also offer traditional therapy through Mike Nicastro Counseling for teens and adults navigating anxiety, depression, life transitions, or relationship issues. Many clients move between both practices depending on their needs.
Where do sessions take place?
You can meet in person at my Denver office or online anywhere in Colorado through secure telehealth. I also offer optional on-site sessions or race support as part of the Comprehensive Race Partnership plan.
What happens in a first session?
The first session is about understanding your story, goals, and what brought you here. We’ll discuss your background, training context, and the areas of life or sport you’d like to focus on. You’ll leave with a sense of direction and next steps.
Do you take insurance?
I am an out-of-network provider and do not bill insurance directly. Many athletes prefer this flexibility for privacy and scheduling reasons. I can provide a superbill that you may submit to your insurance for partial reimbursement.
How often should I come in?
Most athletes begin with weekly or bi-weekly sessions, then transition to the Momentum Plan or monthly check-ins once we’ve established a rhythm. We’ll create a structure that fits your training and recovery schedule.
Can you coordinate with my coach or team?
Yes, with your consent. Collaboration can help align your mental health and performance goals. I often coordinate with coaches, athletic trainers, and nutritionists when it benefits the athlete’s overall plan.
What are your qualifications?
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor Candidate (LPCC) in Colorado with a background as a Division I athlete, ultramarathon runner, and high school coach. My counseling integrates clinical training with firsthand experience in endurance sport.
How do I get started?
You can schedule a free 15-minute consultation to see if this approach feels like a good fit. We’ll talk through what you’re looking for and outline next steps.
